Winter 2024 El Nino Or La Nina. La niña is the cool phase of the pacific ocean's temperature cycle that alters rainfall, heat waves, and drought patterns. El niño hasn't even grown cold, but national forecasters say its counterpart, la niña, is already waiting in the wings to take over.

La niña is expected to form as early as september and last through the winter, bringing impacts such as an active atlantic hurricane season and a warmer, drier south. Noaa expects la niña to develop this fall and persist through winter, affecting weather patterns across the globe.
